Ocean University of China, EWIE Research Institutes Discuss Higher Education Cooperation between China and Thailand

On the afternoon of March 4th, the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of Ocean University of China, the Fisheries College, the Secretariat of the China Thailand Higher Education Cooperation Alliance, and the EWIE Research Institute held an online work seminar to strengthen exchanges and promote China Thailand higher education cooperation. Attendees included Li Weidong, Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of Ocean University of China, Wang Linshu, Deputy Director, Professor Qi Li, Dean of the College of Fisheries, Professor Haishen Wen, Vice Dean, and Professor Jingyu Li, Executive Director of the China Thailand Ocean and Fisheries Center, as well as the Secretary General and Executive Director of the China Thailand Higher Education Cooperation Alliance, E Xuewen, Secretary General and Executive Director of the Alliance, Jin Xiaojun, Vice Dean of the EWIE Research Institute, and Feng Jishang, Director of the Project Research and Development Center, attended the meeting.

Vice President Jin Xiaojun of the EWIE Research Institute chaired the meeting. On behalf of Dean Wang Wei, he welcomed the guests and provided an overview of the EWIE’s history, business sectors and key projects. He also detailed the academic research, curriculum development, international resources, platform construction, and other aspects of the EWIE Research Institute.

Secretary General E Xuewen gave a detailed overview of the establishment, current status, and future plans of the China Thailand Higher Education Cooperation Alliance. He highlighted eight key tasks for the alliance’s future development and emphasized the need to enhance working mechanism and utilize the strengths of its member universities. Secretary General E Xuewen welcomes Ocean University of China to join the alliance. The alliance is willing to explore the establishment of an Agricultural and Aquatic Products Professional Committee, which will build a communication and exchange platform from the aspects of course credit recognition, student exchange, teacher exchange, short-term projects, academic degree improvement, research innovation, offering comprehensive services to its members.

Professor Zheng Xiaodong, Deputy Director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Aquatic Science at the School of Fisheries, Ocean University of China, detailed the establishment, accomplishments, and future cooperation plans of the New Agricultural Science Aquatic Alliance; Professor Li Jingyu presented the work and achievements of the China Thailand Marine and Aquatic Center and outlined the content and methods for future cooperation.

Vice President Jin Xiaojun of the EWIE Research Institute provided an overview of the EWIE’s recent international education projects. She highlighted its collaborations with both domestic and international universities, with a particular focus on higher education institutions in Thailand.

The three parties involved share common objectves: advancing the national “the Belt and Road” initiative, enhancing higher education exchanges and cooperation between China and Thailand and promoting higher education to support regional economics’ development. They aims to leverage complementary strengths in higher education resources, information, international talent training models. A consensus has been reached to focus on the Maritime Silk Road and to strengthen collaboration between China and Thailand in maritime related universities.

The three parties have agreed to bolster exchanges and deepen cooperation in several key areas. These include enhancing partnerships between Chinese and Thai universities, establishing professional committees, advancing collaboration in aquaculture between China and Thailand, and promoting future international scientific research efforts.

The Alliance of China Thailand Universities was founded in Kunming, Yunnan in October 2020. Supported by the China Education International Exchange Association, this open international education platform was jointly established by 14 universities and educational institutions from China and Thailand. The alliance is committed to deepening China Thailand higher education exchanges, promoting China Thailand higher education exchanges and cooperation within the framework of the “the Belt and Road” initiative and Thailand’s national development strategy, and promoting higher education to serve regional economic development.

Ocean University of China, a prominent comprehensive institution under the Ministry of Education, excels in oceanography and aquaculture. It is a key participant in the national “985 Project” and “211 Project”, and has been selected as a Class A “world-class university in China. The university operates three campuses: Laoshan, Yushan, and Fushan, with a fourth, the West Coast Campus, currently under construction. It also boasts a fleet of three teaching and scientific research vessels: Dongfanghong 3, Dongfanghong 2, and Angel-1 scientific research transportation supply ships.
